THIS IS JIM
Jim has been utilizing a variety of technology for a number of years to help him live more safely and independently. The biggest piece of technology that aids him in his day to day activities is the Alexa device. Jim has several devices throughout his home. In conjunction with his phone, Jim uses Alexa to control the lights, TV, automatic door lock, and the smart thermostat in his home. “Through Alexa I can just tell her to turn on the heat or turn it off. I got an Alexa in my room and I got one in the kitchen,” Jim said. “Anywhere I am in the house, I can control it. All my apps are downloaded on my phone so I can do it from my phone too.”

The automatic door lock on the front door has been a game changer for Jim. “The lock has come in handy lots of times,” said Jim’s provider, Kristy. “He doesn’t have to give keys out to people, which is a safety thing.” Jim can control who comes in and out of his home remotely from his cell phone. He’s even able to let someone in his home if he isn’t there. Jim also has a motor on his bedroom door that opens and closes the door with the press of a button. This offers Jim even more independence and privacy whenever he needs it. He has plans to put the same kind of motor on the front door so he can be alone for longer periods of time.

It has taken Jim some time to get his home the way he wants it to be, but it’s been worth it. The virtual assistance he receives in his home has given Jim more independence and made him feel more in control of his own life. Jim is proof that the use of technology is life changing. Because of his Alexa device, smart thermostat, door lock and more, he is able to live more independently and confidently, while still receiving the care and support he needs.
