Free Choice of Provider
In the developmental disabilities system, free choice of provider means that individuals have the right to choose who provides services. One of the roles of the Service & Support Associate (SSA) is to help people navigate the process to ensure free choice of provider is upheld and appropriately documented. The SSA ensures the person is aware of all the provider options (i.e., must be certified, willing, and able to provide the needed services).
All providers are certified through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD). DODD maintains a list of all certified providers and reviews the services provided on a regular basis.
The Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities also maintains a local provider list. This list is comprised of agency and independent providers that directly expressed an interest in working with individuals in Allen County. The SSA shares this information and helps further explore the available providers.
