In honor of National Volunteer Week, we’re putting the spotlight on some of the best volunteers we know: our Board Members! These seven individuals give their time and talents to support and strengthen our organization. Today, we’re glad to introduce Melissa Weaver!
1. Why do you serve on the board for the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities?
My son, Owen, is disabled, and I was asked to serve on the board as a voice for parents with younger disabled children. It’s a privilege to serve on the board, and it is a position that I take with pride and sincerity.
2. What do you like about serving?
I have learned a great deal about the intricacies and all the behind-the-scenes work that goes on in the disability community. I enjoy having an effect on improving the lives and support systems of the clients who receive services.
3. What is something you have learned about ACBDD that you want people to know?
I already knew quite a bit about the younger disability services through experience with my child. By being on the board, I have enjoyed broadening my horizons in the Adult Service world and experiencing all the great opportunities ACBDD provides for the community.
4. If you could meet one person who has inspired you, dead or alive, who would it be?
Mother Teresa, because her quotes and the way she lived her life always humble my heart. “You have never really lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.”
5. What was your first volunteer experience? How old were you, and what motivated you to volunteer?
While I was in college, I volunteered at an elementary school to help tutor children who were struggling to learn to read. It was amazing to watch them learn and grow in their own way, at their own time.
