Board of DD Continues to Evolve
In 1977, the residents of this county graciously approved the first tax levy to financially support services to people with developmental disabilities. At that time, the Board of DD offered two services, Marimor School and Marimor Industries. These programs began as a grassroots effort by parents to obtain services for their children, who had been shut away or ignored by society. In the past 44 years, these programs have served thousands of individuals and families. Since the

Why Do Babies Wear Helmets?
When you hear the word “helmet” what comes to mind? I think of the helmet that children and adults use when riding a bike – or maybe even a motorcycle. It’s something worn to protect your head in case of an accident, right? But what about when a baby is wearing a helmet? Cranial molding helmets*, or cranial bands, are an approved, FDA treatment for shaping a baby’s head after a flat spot has formed. Since helmets are used while the head is still soft, it does not squish or sq

Local Spotlight: Operation Save the Lost
My husband, Nick, and I reside in Delphos. We have four little girls, Madelynn, Lillian, Hazel, and Aubreigh, and a dog named Letti. Recently, in our surrounding communities, we have been involved in search efforts for two children who wandered off and were missing – both of whom had autism. This really hit home for us, as we have a daughter who doesn’t speak and has autism; she does not understand the dangers of wandering off. These tragedies have opened our eyes to how fast

Marimor School Safety: Updates to Know When Visiting Our Campus
It’s been a busy summer here at Allen County Board of DD, with some major changes happening in our parking lot. When Marimor School ended for summer, construction began. I’m lucky enough to sit near a window in our office, so I had a front row seat to the progress. The large machines, beeps, and rattles sort of became my background music. One day, the construction shook the building enough to knock a light cover down! (No one was harmed.) So what was the construction all abou

One Mom’s Experience at a Community Developmental Screening
First, tell us about you and your family. We are a family of three. I’m Jill, an elementary school teacher. My husband, Jamey, is a groundskeeper for the city Parks and Recreation department. Lincoln is our son, and he’s your typical 2 1/2 year old toddler. Were you nervous about going to the screening? I was nervous about going to the screening, because of the unknown – like not knowing how it all worked. However, I was not nervous about what they were going to tell me about
