Allen’s Story: National Disability Employment Awareness Month

The ACBDD is proud to observe October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This year’s theme “America’s Workforce: Empowering All” celebrates the diverse and valuable contributions people with disabilities bring to the work environment. Embracing the talents and skills of individuals with disabilities allows employers to tap into a wider pool of potential workers. These workers help to keep our nation’s economy strong and are representative of the overall population. This month we wish to raise awareness about disability employment issues, demonstrate a commitment to an inclusive workplace and recognize successful workers who do not allow their disability to be a deterrent to living their best lives.

A shining example is Allen Martin, who will celebrate his third year working at McDonald’s later this month. He starts each day with an apron, a hat and a smile ready to work the grill for the breakfast shift. He says that when you like what you do it doesn’t seem like work. Allen enjoys his job and his co-workers. He likes to bring positivity into the restaurant and says he likes to make others happy while working.

Allen believes that following the rules and making food correctly is important. When you mention his name to his co-workers, they immediately respond with a big smile because they enjoy working with him as a part of their morning crew. Allen’s manager says he has a great personality and likes to share a joke with everyone. She adds that he is a dependable worker. He arranges his transportation weekly by calling in advance with his schedule, which is very important since his shift begins at 5:30 a.m.!

When Allen decided he wanted to work in the community, he received support and direction from his Service & Support Associate and the team of people that support him. Marimor Industries’ provided Employment Services as part of his Individual Options waiver. Marimor staff were able to assist him with job leads, completing applications and provided a job coach that helped him when he began his new job. Allen recalls taking his time to learn all aspects of his job to perform the work correctly and efficiently. He is a loyal crew member that cares about his co-workers, brings an upbeat attitude, stays busy working and represents McDonald’s in a positive manner.

When he’s not working Allen likes to exercise, fish, spend time outdoors, shop, and be with his friends. Allen’s kind nature, attention to detail and positive attitude makes him a great employee and friend. Congratulations on 3 years of employment Allen!
